Planned surveys

Here you can find an overview of our different surveys.

Macro perspective

Theoretical framework and general context

Goal:

The goal of systematic reviews is the development of a competency model as well as the validation or extension of this model.

Method:

Three systematic reviews in the sub-areas “high reliability organizations”, patient safety and “Gestaltungskompetenz” were carried out. Based on these reviews each theoretical concept was described in its essence, competencies were extracted and all results were synthesized in three, research field-related-conceptual maps. The GIO model was developed based on these conceptual maps and will be used in the planned surveys or survey instruments.

(Expected) results:

The three sub-areas mentioned above have not yet been merged. Thus the synopsis provides important findings for a common basic competency model based on the three sub-areas.

Goal:

The objective of the CIRS data analysis is to disclose and categorise the types of errors and to derive negative examples. CIRS data are anonymous reports about critical occurrences or near misses.

Method:

The content of the CIRS data is to be analysed.

(Expected) results:

So far barely any systematic categorisation of the types of errors mentioned in the CIRS data has been made. Therefore, a elaborate category system including the most important types of errors is expected.

Goal:

The objective is to gain new insights regarding the perception, expectations and experiences of citizens on patient safety. Therefore a quantitative and standardised citizen survey will be send out by post in the city of Osnabrück. The sample is selected by the registration office of the city of Osnabrück.

Method:

The questionnaires for the selected citizens have been sent by post to allow a representative survey regarding the characteristics of age and gender of citizens between the ages of 18 and 80 in the city of Osnabrück. 2,944 citizens have received a questionnaire.

(Expected) results:

The data will provide findings about perception, expectations and experiences regarding patient safety from the point of view of the citizens of Osnabrück. These new findings are highly relevant to better understand the context of patient safety and to be able to analyse it more in depth.

Goal:

The objective of the focus group interviews is to deepen the findings of the quantitative surveys of citizens and members of support groups.

Method:

Following the two previous quantitative surveys, focus group interviews are carried out with participants of support groups. Using an internet search, potential participants for the survey will be identified and contacted by e-mail. The aim is to conduct two focus group surveys with 8 to 10 participants each. Content of the interviews are topics of the surveys and the discussion of the first results extracted from the surveys.

(Expected) results:

In the context of the focus group interviews, in-depth analyses of expectations and problem areas in the field of patient safety are expected, which will help to interpret the quantitative results.

Micro perspective

Surveys in cooperating hospitals

Goal:

With qualitative and quantitative surveys of employees, information will be collected for the case studies (information continuity, strategic management of clinical emergency departments and diversity management). The information is needed to analyse the current situation in the hospitals.

Method:

Various surveys (interviews, participatory observation and standardized surveys) are carried out within the case studies of diversity management, information continuity and strategic management of clinical emergency departments. The different surveys executed in the case studies will be developed over time, thus no concrete information can be provided at this point.

(Expected) Results:

The results of the case studies provide answers to specific questions in the areas of information continuity, strategic management of clinical emergency departments and diversity management. Additionally, the results combined with the GIO model serve as the base for the interactive learning environment.

Meso perspective

Surveys in cooperating hospitals

Goal:

Information about structure, process, result and routine data, with regard to patient safety relevant characteristics will be collected in the cooperating hospitals by means of a document analysis.

Method:

Within the case studies additional document analyses will be carried out. Different patient safety relevant data will be collected online as well as directly in the clinics for evaluation within the case studies.

(Expected) results:

New findings for the case studies are generated with the document analysis which is necessary for the analysis of the current situation of the hospital.
